Highlights
Aside from a wealth of dramatic historical sites and sweeping desert panoramas there are many fascinating smaller visits, including the traditional soap factory and hammam (bath house) in Aleppo and the winding streets and hidden courtyards of Damascus. Experience the stillness and complete absence of modernity as you walk along the colonnade at Apamea, through the Dead Cities and at St Simeon’s Monastery. See Palmyra at sunrise and the Sea of Galilee from Umm Qais and hear the Lord´s Prayer recited in the language of Christ in Maaloula. The talks of Lavinia Byrne and local speakers bring the past to life and reveal aspects of contemporary Syria and Jordan.

About the tour
Fly to Aleppo and tour this wonderfully preserved city including the citadel, Armenian Cathedral, Souk and a 12th century hospital. Continue to Krak des Chevaliers, an eight hundred year old Crusader castle. Drive into the desert and the magnificent ruined city of Palmyra. Visit the Aramaic speaking village of Maaloula before arriving in Damascus. Here explore the world’s oldest continually inhabited city with visits including the stunning Umayyad Mosque and Via Recta. In Jordan, visit biblical sites before relaxing in the restorative Dead Sea and seeing the stupendous rose city of Petra, carved from a towering rock wall. End the tour with an exhilarating jeep safari in the multi-hued landscapes of Wadi Rum, where you will see some of the most magical desert scenery in the world. Throughout the tour there will a series of fascinating talks by Lavinia Byrne.
