Hear paediatrician Dr Aleida Guevara, daughter of Che Guevara, give a talk on the inspiring Cuban humanitarian project, 'Operation Miracle.' Talk to local opthamologists about the challenges they face in their day-to-day practice. Take a walking tour to look at Havana’s restoration project led by a city historian and award winning architect. Drive to Cienfuegos, cross Treasure Lake by speedboat through mangrove swamps, take a scenic train journey to historic Santa Clara and then on to Trinidad where you can wander through the cobbled streets and admire the baroque churches. Walk through the stunning Topes del Collantes mountains and learn of the medicinal properties of local plants with an expert naturalist guide. Visit a successful commune in beautiful Vinales and learn about rural eye care from the resident health workers.

About the tour

Cuba is a country like no other; famously communist, a tropical island with music in its veins, and the home of a healthcare system that lays claim to being world class, despite its limited resources. Gain unique insight into Cuba's healthcare system with special focus on eyecare on this bespoke study tour. Meet local opthamologists, visit a polyclinic, the Pando-Ferrer Eye Hospital in Havana and a medical training school. Hear Dr Aleida Guevara (daughter of Che Guevara) speak about 'Operation Miracle', a highly successful humanitarian project started by Cuba and supported by Venezuela, which has provided free eye surgery to almost half a million poor people from 28 Caribbean and Latin American nations.
Visit the cigar factory, farms, villages, and examine the restoration of Havana. Enjoy live music, glorious colonial architecture, beautiful landscapes, stunning beaches and the vivaciousness of Cuba.

At the end of the tour, you may extend for a few days in Havana or at the Varadero Beach Resort. Stay in a boutique hotel in Havana and enjoy the vibrant nightlife, music and culture of the city. Alternatively, relax in a fully inclusive beach hotel in Varadero, famous for its miles of sparkling white sand, soft turquoise water and coconut palms.
