In The Steps of Florence Nightingale

27 March - 5 April 2011

With Extension to Ephesus

Highlights

This tour follows in the footsteps of Florence Nightingale on a journey that breathes life into her remarkable story. The visit to Scutari Barracks is very moving for nurses, and is one of the highlights of the tour. As Professor Mary Spinks of the Florence Nightingale Foundation says: 'It was inspirational to look down the huge corridors – somewhere where nursing history was created. To see all this in the company of Alex Attewell, probably the best historian on Florence Nightingale, was an incomparable experience.’

The tour will be led by Alex Attewell, alongside History of Medicine expert Sue Weir in London and Pat Smedley, founder member of the Florence Nightingale Derbyshire Association in Derbyshire. Between them, these tour leaders have decades of experience lecturing and guiding Nightingale tours, bringing alive her inspiring life story and her relevance to nursing health care leadership in the twenty-first century.

Alp Kaya, national guide in Istanbul, has been working as a guide since 1983 and is an extremely knowledgeable, popular and experienced guide.

In The Steps of Florence Nightingale
About the tour

This study tour has been designed especially for US Health Care workers who have an interest in the life and times of this inspirational woman. Travel from London, which formed the centre of her professional life after Scutari; to her home in rural England; and finally, to Scutari Barracks in Istanbul where she worked tending the wounded of the Crimean War. It was the shocking conditions she encountered here that spurred her on in her campaign to improve conditions in army hospitals, which continued hroughout her life and helped establish the foundation of modern nursing practice. Follow the life of Florence Nightingale, both in her physical footsteps in wards in which she worked and established, and through the expert knowledge of our tour leaders, who put her life and history into the broader context of the time.

At the end of the tour, there is the option to take a three night extension to Ephesus, one of the most outstanding 'outdoor museums' in the world. The best preserved classical city of the Eastern Mediterranean and one of the great cities of the ancient world, it was the site of the famous Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Dating back to the fifth century BC, the magnficent ruins of Ephesus give modern visitors a chance to absorb the atmosphere of a succession of powerful ancient civilisations.

This tour is led by Alex Attewell. More about Alex.
