Picture from the Palliative Care, Architecture & Design - UK tour.

This tour examines how cancer and palliative care can integrate with design and architecture for the benefit of both patients and staff. The tour has been developed in close consultation with Maggie’s Centres, an influential UK charity established in 1996. The centres are built around the belief of founder Maggie Keswick Jencks' belief that people should not “lose the joy of living in the fear of dying”. They have worked with the some of the world’s foremost architects to create beautiful centres of support in the UK and abroad.

The tour provides context by examining historic hospital and hospice design with visits to St Christopher’s in London and St Thomas’ Hospital. It also examines new architectural developments in hospice and hospital design, with visits to the leading British architectural practice, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. This respected firm designed the Maggie’s Centre in London’s Charing Cross and the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital, as well as others. The itinerary includes visits to many different centres throughout the UK, with a different emphasis during each visit, depending on the specialism or unique focus of each centre. The tour route travels from London up the east coast of England by rail and into Edinburgh. From Edinburgh drive in a great loop through Scotland and enjoy some of its stunning scenery via Dundee, Aberdeen and into the Highlands and Inverness, before curving down the side of Loch Lomond to Glasgow.

At the end of the tour there is an optional extension in Hong Kong to examine how a Maggie’s Centre operates within a different country and culture.
